Your Food Town is proud to announce our local grocery chain was among the 68 businesses honored during the Houston Business Journal’s inaugural Family-Owned Business Awards. The awards, announced on June 15, recognize Houston-area businesses that have successfully passed from one generation to the next, and which have had a positive impact on the Bayou City’s economy and community.

Food Town was honored to be named among the honorees of the Houston Business Journal’s 2023 Family-Owned Business Awards.

Our family-owned business got its start in 1993 with Ross Lewis, a lifelong groceryman who, together with a handful of business associates, set out to provide his friends and neighbors with national-brand products, quality meats and fresh produce at competitive prices. He believed in his mission, and he passed his love of the industry down to his son, current Food Town President Mike Lewis.

Mike’s own sons, Evan and Clay Lewis, followed in their father’s footsteps, carving out unique spots with our company.

Food Town’s success as a family-owned business stems from the fact that our founding family is dedicated to its work — but willing to allow one another the chance to pursue personal growth. Mike put it best in his quote to the Houston Business Journal:

“It’s always been important to us to allow our sons the freedom to follow their own interests, and we think extending that idea to the grocery store has helped. Our two sons have followed very different paths. Clay has always been interested in technology and he’s found a role he enjoys working on the information or IT side of things. Our other son, Evan, enjoys the more hands-on aspects of the work, and he largely focuses on store supervision and management. We’ve allowed them to follow their interests and determine their path in the company. And that has made a tremendous difference.”

Food Town President Mike Lewis joined the company his father, Ross Lewis, began — and his own sons have followed in his footsteps.

The Food Town family is honored to be recognized as a 2023 top family-owned business, and we are grateful for the customers and team members who have helped our business grow through the years.

What began as a single store in Pasadena has expanded to include 30 locations throughout the Houston metro area. And although we’ve grown, we remain dedicated to Mr. Lewis’ initial dream of providing quality products at affordable prices — and to giving back to our fellow community members in every way possible.

It’s an honor to serve our fellow Houstonians, to contribute to causes close to community members’ hearts and to see younger generations continue moving Food Town forward. Today and always, at Food Town, it’s your town.
